A few questions regarding software licensing:
We have found the Edustar SOE too bloated and slow for the lower-spec’ed laptops that were afforable for our school under the NSSCF; indeed we found the majority of the software installed was not used by staff or students. However, we do have a need for a couple of licensed pieces of software (most importantly Mathematica), but have not had any response for the department regarding obtaining individual installers for these. It strikes me as a huge waste of money for our school to need to purchase software that the DEECD has already licensed. Will there be support to develop the technological environment which bests suits individual schools?
As it currently stands the edustar Secondary SOE is only available for school-owned machines, meaning the benefit of DEECD-licensed software is lost on BYOD schemes. So that we can effectively plan and budget for future years, what are the plans for licensed software (e.g. Mathematica, Inspiration, Acrobat, Photoshop elements) for BYOD schemes?
Is DEECD investigating licencing cloud-based software for schools where this better fits the learning environment?
